In the larger world a bridge spans a gap...SAME THING IN DENTISTRY!
When you are missing one or two teeth and have a tooth at either end of the gap, a bridge will span that gap and replace the missing teeth.

Bridges are alternatives to Implants, which is the longest lasting and best way to replace a missing tooth. However sometimes if an implant cannot be used due to thinning of the bone, a bridge is the prefered option for tooth replacement.
A bridge is completed by trimming the tooth on either side of the gap for a crown. An impression is taken and a tempory bridge or two temporary crowns are constructed and placed. The impression is sent to the dental lab where the bridge is constructed. Approximatly two weeks later the bridge is tried in and cemented premantly into place.
Bridges can replace on or more teeth, however the longer the bridge the more force is placed on it and sooner it will need to be replaced. That is why with long span bridges (2 or more missing teeth) implants are the prefered treatment.
Bridges can be formed from all metal, metal ceramic or all ceramic. The choice of material depends on the length of the bridge, your biting forces and space avaliable.
Bridges can last a very long time, however they are suspectable to decay at the interface of the metal/ceramic and natural tooth structure.
On anterior teeth a conserative bridge called a Maryland Bridge can be used to replace on missing tooth. Two metal or ceramic wings are constructed and bonded to the back of the natural teeth.
