Periodic Periodontal Maintenance and Oral Cancer Screening! The six month dental cleaning and check-up is much more involved and important than you may known.
At this visit our Hygienist will first talk to you about your health. Be sure to update us with any changes to your health such as new medications or conditions. A record of your blood pressure will also be taken. She will then talk to you about any concerns that you may be experiencing.
Please be sure to let us know if you have any of the following conditions:
After a careful review we then take x-rays that show us the high cavity risk areas of your teeth and of any other areas of concern. An oral cancer screening will be performed examining your head, neck and, mouth. Any suspicious areas found will be addressed.
Either a full or partial record of you gum depth is then taken depending or your individual history. Once a year everyone should have a full probing of their gums to check for periodontal disease. The findings will be discussed with you and the appropriate cleaning will be prescribed. Best case scenario is a periodic cleaning or "prophy" however if there are areas of heavy build-up or pocketing of the gums a deeper cleaning may be required.
Cleaning is done with the newest technology using a Cavitron scaler. This uses ultrasonic waves to clean off the plaque deposits on the teeth while a water spray rinses the bacteria and plaque away. Detailed cleaning of heavier deposits and stain will be removed by hand. Your teeth will then be polished.
A fluoride foam is then applied at this time and allowed to soak into your teeth. Fluoride will harden the teeth and help to rebuild areas that have lost mineral content due to acidic foods, drink and plaque. It is recommended that fluoride be applied to both adult and children's teeth at least twice a year after your cleaning. You should not eat or drink for 30 minutes following fluoride application.
At some time during your visit Dr. Saydyk will check any areas of concern, review the x-rays, and check all of your teeth. Dr. Saydyk will discuses his recommendations with you and a proper course of treatment will be planned.
